Francisca Carvalho (Portugal, 1981) is a Lisbon-based artist whose practice spans drawing, painting, collage, and textiles. Through experimentation, she explores the tension between skill and deskill, craft and improvisation, creating a language where figuration and abstraction intertwine.

At Drawing Room, a selection of works from two recent series will be presented. From Pantalons pour attirer le vent (Pavilhão Branco, Lisbon), Carvalho’s vertical gouaches and colored-pencil drawings unfold playful, pop-inflected imagery, weaving sensual motifs into fluid, rhythmic compositions. From Peplum (Fundação Carmona e Costa, Lisbon), her drawings adopt a mannerist palette: gloves, vegetal forms, mythic creatures, and hybrid beings that oscillate between the familiar and the uncanny, fragments of a bohemian lifestyle.

As she notes, “a mannerist palette… bulbs that are pouches that are placentas in her body… inverted Disney hands or Mickey Mouse gloves, falling.” This blend of pop sensuality and metamorphosis reveals Carvalho’s poetic dislocation and layered symbolism, transforming disparate sources into enigmatic constellations that resist categorization while inviting imaginative interpretation.
