José Almeida Pereira (Guimarães, 1979), lives and works in Porto. He attended independent studies at Maumaus (2012), did a master’s and bachelor’s degree at the College of Fine Arts of Porto (2005, 2008). The center of José Almeida Pereira’s practice is painting. Crossing a number of genres, from landscape to still life, from mythological scenes to religious representations, the artist composes perceptual biases of historical paintings. It reframes and introduces technological processes of filtering, distortion, superimposition and anamorphosis, questioning contemporary sharpness and high definition, and persisting in an unsettling agitation of vision. It is in this interstice that it establishes a broad territory for exploring the tactile and gestural grammar of painting, where synthetic and fluid brushstrokes tend towards acidic, luminous and prismatic colors, applying large stains that contrast with loose marks and gestures, in a crystallized choreography that indicates other constellations apprehended in a second degree of proximity to the paintings.
