TONY SQUANCE

United Kingdom, 1969

PITT STUDIO

Tony Squance produces two separate bodies of work, which he often combines:

1 – “Figures” which are drawn from a wide variety of source materials, mainly photographs of Instagram influencers, public yoga practitioners, gurus, politicians, contortionists, drunks and beggars, all vying for his attention. The drawings are cut out and scattered on the floor. They are rendered in infantile candy shop colours.

2 – “Backgrounds” which are romantic landscapes painted on multi-panelled grids or cropped from single sheets. Sometimes they have an apocalyptic feel to them.

The production of the figures and of the backgrounds are entirely different processes and may be done weeks or months apart, resembling an animation studio or a group laying down vocals and backing tracks.
The groups of figures are stuck onto the backgrounds with tape, giving special emphasis to their glaring separateness.
