Fernando Marques Penteado, born in 1955, in São Paulo and presently a Brussels-based artist, has been a persistent scavenger of trifles, unattended little objects resting on open market pavements of cities where he has lived, which include Porto and London. Then comes the stitches: embroidery has been his prevalent medium and allowed him to sew stories and voices.
At 2024 DRAWING ROOM LISBOA’s edition, Fernando Marques Penteado presents, with Lehmann + Silva, an extension of his latest exhibition at the Porto gallery.
In “Decalcomania, Cartões Postais e Souvenires” [Decalcomania, Postcards and Souvenirs] Fernando’s works entwine fabrics with both real and fictional stories that explore the artist’s personal universe and highlight and homage his family history. Fabrics offer their textures and evoke atmospheres where the artist stitches’, like a calligraphy, unite and combine references that draw stories around the Portuguese emigration, their hard work and a traditional culture kept among their widespread diaspora.
