HELENA ALMEIDA

Portugal, 1934

GALERIA FILOMENA SOARES

Is an unavoidable artist in the international contemporary art scene. She was born in 1934, Lisbon, Portugal, where she lives and works. She studied painting at the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes de Lisboa. Her artistic practice includes photography, video and drawing, evolving from a permanent questioning of the language of painting. Although the artist always appears in front of the camera she insists that her images are not self-portraits. Dressed in black since the early 1970s, sometimes with objects or furniture found in her studio – chairs, benches, mirrors, wires, pigments, among others – the artist assumes positions and situations meticulously choreographed and staged in videos and drawings in order to create complex visual compositions that both reflect on space and time and on the relationship between the artist and the image.
