Helena Almeida (1934-2018, Portugal) is an essential artist on the international contemporary art scene. She studied Painting at the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes in Lisbon. Her artistic practice encompasses photography, video and drawing, evolving from a permanent interrogation of the language of painting. Initially, videos and drawings function as studies and possibilities for photographs to gain autonomy and legitimacy in the relevant way of raising questions about contemporary artistic practices themselves, as well as the various possibilities for implementing and producing culture in today’s society. The artist represented Portugal at the Venice Biennale in 1982 and 2005. In 2004, she participated in the Sydney Biennale. Recently her work has been exhibited in important museums and galleries, such as: Galerie Les Filles Du Calvarie, Paris; John Hansard Gallery, Southampton; Fundación Telefónica, Madrid; Helga de Alvear, Madrid; São Paulo Pinacoteca; Kettle’s Yard, University of Cambridge; Filomena Soares Gallery, Lisbon; Thomas Erben Gallery, New York and Tate Modern, London.
