Paula Rito

ARTE PERIFÉRICA

Paula Rito (Portugal, 1964) started planting a wood in 1986. And what had begun as a large garden quickly turned into an immense wild forest.
Interweaving textures of light and shadow, she has designed the wood over the years as a living, growing organism. In his experience of the place, in a creative and above all sensory process, the drawings develop in tension between contemplation, memory, detail, restlessness, like emanations of nature.
By outlining in some drawings the passages in the thick vegetation, adding the tunnels or “footpaths” opened up by her body in the landscape, she alludes to the difficult relationship between humans and nature.
