Paulo Damião, born in Pilar-Brittany (São Miguel – Azores) in 1975. Degree in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (FBAUL), 2004.
The group of works presented by Paulo Damião is the result of the artist’s recordings of the processes involved in thinking about painting and drawing and, consequently, what becomes visible and invisible in the final work.
“For this group of works I’ve been developing, I’m focusing on the ‘act of hiding’ during the creative process of drawing and painting. What is shown to the viewer is the limit that serves the painter to be understood or suggested to their reading, more or less shared by both.
What the painting hides, almost like a kind of memory, through the successive layers, the corrected mistakes, the suggestive signs and/or signals, is the structure of the painting; it is what makes it complete, absolute, before the viewer’s gaze.”
