PEDRO CABRITA REIS

Portugal, 1956

FONSECA MACEDO – ARTE CONTEMPORÂNEA

Pedro Cabrita Reis lives and works in Lisbon. His unique philosophical and poetical approach to issues related to space and memory has received a stead international attention as early as the mid-1980s, firstly in sculpture and secondly in a variety of other media: painting, photography, drawing and installation.
By assembling industrial and simple materials, found and manufactured objects and submitting them to constructive processes, Cabrita recycles almost anonymous reminiscences of primordial gestures and actions repeated in everyday life. Underpinned by an anthropological reflection which is contrary to reductive sociological narratives, Cabrita’s theoretically and formally diverse work gains a suggestive power of association which, going far beyond the visual, reaches a metaphorical dimension. In fact, it is upon silence and enquiry that the work of Cabrita Reis is built.
