José Escada (Portugal, 1934–1980) was an important Portuguese painter and visual artist. He studied at the António Arroio School and graduated in Painting from the Lisbon School of Fine Arts.
His work is characterized by a high degree of experimentation, often situated between figuration and abstraction. He worked across painting, drawing, collage, illustration, and cut-out reliefs, focusing primarily on line, color, light, form, and space.
During the 1960s, he lived in Paris, where he was associated with the KWY group, together with artists such as Lourdes Castro, René Bertholo, João Vieira, Costa Pinheiro, Gonçalo Duarte, Christo, and Jan Voss. This experience contributed to the development of his artistic language and to his exposure to international trends in contemporary art.
