Mumtazz (Lisbon, 1970-2019), one of the most distinctive artists in the Portuguese art world, developed a radically heteroclite, profusely poetic and mysteriously shamanic journey which exerted an intense and subterranean influence on a wide range of artists.
Born in Lisbon, the artist completed the advanced drawing course at Ar.Co and a master’s degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, on a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Closely linked to the practice of counterculture, politically and ecologically involved, resuming the strategies and modes of psychedelism, Mumtazz’s artwork articulates influences and elements from different cultures, different historical periods, and a wide range of different languages – poetry, sound, embroidery, photography, installation, and ephemeral, geometric and organic forms.
