RUI MATOS

Lisbon, Portugal, 1959

GALERIA MONUMENTAL

Rui Matos’s sculpture has been progressing over the years towards dematerialization and lightness, from pieces made from stone to pure drawing inscribed in space.
Assuming his own work as that of a storyteller, we can follow the story of his artistic journey from a primordial human condition with the use of slate in “Organs and Artifacts” (1987), through the plaster and bronze of “First Island” and “Mediterranean” and the stone work of the 1990s and 2000s – “Enormity, Sequence and Shipwreck”, “Transformations-Uncertain Stories”, “Objects of Memory” and “Incomplete Stories”, until, about a decade ago, starting to use iron and reaching an age of writing and tattooing memories and paths on a surface that reaches the greatest depth: “The Skin of Things”, “Inside”, “Transmutations”, “Stories of other Ages”, “Lost on the return journey ”,“ The Figures of dreams are closer to me ”,“ Any way out from the logic of language can be the entry in a revealing dictionary ”,“ Out of a known map ”.
With an important contribution of public art spread throughout Portugal and Germany, his work is represented in collections such as those of Caixa Geral de Depósitos, Dr. Santos Rocha Museum or PLMJ Foundation.
